Not new to electronics, but it has been a while and ive never worked much with automotive scale projects. Just a little something I designed and wanted to know if the 12V 30A automotive relays are safe to run straight off my battery.
And got the following answer:
The low current circuit in the relay could be hooked up straight to a battery, because it has coils which provide resistance, but usually you would want some sort of a switch to control the device you're operating. The high current circuit of the relay should be rated somewhat higher than the device you're operating. If you hook that side up straight to the battery, you'd have a short circuit, and not much of any relay can handle that. Although theoretically, one with a higher rating than the cranking amps of your battery would survive. But your battery wouldn't. The highest rating I can think of in Automotive use would be a Ford starter relay, which can handle 200-300? amps.
