I have a rheem heating and air unit and it stopped working about a week ago. My dad has changed the relay switch and has tested voltage on almost everything else you can test and we still can not get the unit working. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong.

There are many possiblities. Do you have 24v to the contactor (relay) from the thermostat? If not check transformer in furnace. The furnace is operated via a 120v curcuit which is seperate from the AC's condencing unit (outdoor unit with compressor) which is 230v. Check for 230v at both ends of contactor. Also check service disconnect on outside of house near condencing unit. Some have fuses behind the front panel. Does the fan in the condensing unit run? Was the unit running prior to this breakdown or is this new installation? If voltage is as should be you have an open curcuit. The likelyness of neither the fan or compressor operating when voltage is present is low unless the fan went bad first causing the compressor to overheat, short out,and fail under this condition. If so then it's time for a new one! You can check the compressor windings for opens with an ohm meter or continuity tester but first you must disconnect from voltage! Remove the cap on the compressor terminals and disconnect the three wires (mark them so you can replace them to there proper terminals later) and check for continuity between each of the terminals one pair at a time. Then check between each terminal and the case of the compressor. You want to find continuity between each terminal and the other two but none of them to the case. If you find any point between two terminals which doesn't have continuity that's your open curcuit and your compressor is history. The fan can be check in a similar manor BUT, be sure to disconnect the leads from the capacitor and discharge it (short across the terminals with an insulated screwdriver) before testing. Capacitors pack quite a shock even though the electricity to the unit is shut down so be careful.
