I have a need for DC power supply which will provide 48 VDC when first switch ON and automatically reduce the output to 12 VDC in about 25-30 ms. Must be able to provide about 25 A at 48V and constant 10 A on 12 V. It must not have any mechanical relays, solid state output only. It is a electromagnetic clutch which needs to act very fast. We have a circuit now which was build about thirty years ago from transistors and other electronic components available at that time. very complicated, no PC board, everything is just wired up like someone made it in the garage. It has a custom made transformer with seven different windings etc. almost impossible to duplicate. Warner Electric is selling unit like that unfortunately they only have 24 VDC and 90 VDC available and the amperage needed is way to low.

It can be done, but I need to know more about the expected load to decide what is the best way. OK So the 12V is to hold it in and the 48V is a transient to pull it in quick and overcome friction and inertia. You will need a transformer and full wave bridge rectifier capable of providing 12A at 15V rms. Smoothing will not be needed as the clutch will be an inductive load. A 24 - 0 - 24V transformer with a single rectifier will give the 48V. As its only charging a C the current need not be more than about 0.5A - so a 12VA rating will do. This will charge the C to 48*sqrt2 = 68V (dont worry, that will drop VERY quickly as the cap discharges from 68 to 14V) You will need a large capacitor to store the charge Using the formula q = CV = it C = it/V we know i = 25A and t = 30msec and V = 54V whence C = 0.014F or 14,000 uF an electrolytic cap of about 15000uF / 60V with a high power rating will be ideal. Finally, you can use a SCR (thyristor) rated at 100V or so (anyway above 80) and 30A plus to switch in the "48V". If you switch off the 12V supply the 48V will automatically reset. As the clutch is a big inductor you will need to provide a discharge path when you turn it off. This ,means using a "flywheel diode" connected across the clutch coil.
