Probably the easiest and most cost effective way to latch your LED on in response to a momentary switch closure is to wire an low power "sensitive gate" SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) in series with it. Suitable part numbers for your application include the 2N5060 through 2N5064 series, the C103 series (any letter suffix), and the C106 series (any letter suffix). Your LED and its current limiting resistor connect between the positive battery terminal and the anode of the SCR. Your magnetic switch connects between the anode and gate of the SCR. The cathode of the SCR connects to the negative battery terminal. An added benefit is that no current is drawn from the battery until the LED is turned on. If your magnetic switch is normally closed you connect it instead between the gate and cathode. In that configuration you will need to add a high value resistor typically in the 27K -100K range between the anode and gate for any of the part numbers mentioned above. There will be a small current drain through that resistor at all times. An SCR turns on if a sufficient positive current flows into its gate, and once triggered, it remains on as long as sufficient current flows through its anode. Interupting the anode current by either opening the circuit or briefly shunting the current around the device resets the SCR. The data sheets and application notes for any of those parts will give you more information if you need it. Don
