I've got a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 500 SEL. For the past few weeks now, it continues to run even after the key is turned off and even taken out of the ignition. It just started randomly with no signs of anything failing, which as you can probably assume, has made it quite difficult to discover what the problem is. At first I heard that it could be the Fuel Pump Relay in the fuse box that kept it running, as it wasn't killing the power to the pump, but I bought a new relay and that didn't solve the problem. The strange thing is, all of the electronics die when the key is turned to the "off" position (radio, lights, etc.), though all of the gauges on the instrument cluster remain functioning, like the Temp gauge shows the current temperature, the RPM gauge doesn't fall, etc. but the engine continues to run. Atop the fuel pump itself, I pulled the little wire JUST THE WIRE, as in, I didn't unbolt anything but the engine continued to run on. And I know that it can't be dieseling as it shuts off when the fuel pump relay is pulled. So what could it be? It's not the relay and it's not dieseling, so what? Could it be the ignition control module maybe? Ignition switch? If that's so, then why do I have absolutely no trouble starting, driving, and idling for extended periods of time, and why do the electronics die? If it's tied to the relay or anything under the fuse box, that relay in particular, could it be the actual slots that the poles on the relay plug into? The car is very important to me and I can't afford to let anything happen to it. So what would you all do? Oh, and if it's something I can do myself, is there any chance I could be walked through the process? Thanks

This can happen for a couple of reasons: The most obvious is that you are using a key not meant for that car or you have a worn out key. If you have a spare, try that one. A very common problem can occur when you park with the wheels turned all the way to one side and remove the key. When you try to turn the key to start, there is too much pressure on the steering lock to allow the key to turn.
