The motor is probably a capacitor start single phase motor Test the connections to find the 2 separate windings the one with the higher resistance is likely to be the start winding the other the run winding The capacitor is wired in series with the start winding and an internal centrifugal switch. This series circuit is wired in parallel with the run winding (see link diagram) When the supply is connected across the run winding and start winding-capacitor-switch the motor starts up because the current in each winding is out of phase creating 2 phases from one phase supply. When motor is up to speed the centrifugal switch opens disconnecting the start winding and capacitor and leaving just the run winding connected. To reverse the direction reverse the connection on one of the 2 windings not both
