What you need is called a latch circuit - it's designed to 'freeze' the electronic state of the circuit when it is triggered. In our case, we need to make it so that the freeze is triggered as soon as one of the inputs is activated. There are many pre-made latch circuit chips made these days - you need them for computers - but it looks like the 74LS116 is ideal for our purpose, because it has a CLEAR input. The circuit works like this: There are four buttons for the contestants, and a reset switch. The resistors 'pull' the contestants input to LOW and the RESET switch to HIGH. The latch outputs are tied, through some OR gates, to the 'freeze' input, so that when any one of the outputs goes HIGH, the latch will freeze and no more changes to the output can be made. The RESET switch is hit, and all four outputs go LOW. When a contestant hits a button, the input goes HIGH and drives the output HIGH. The latch freezes, and the one high result is stored until the RESET button is pushed. I've left off any circuitry after the outputs, but this is where you'd place the relays that drive the lights, buzzers, etc. If you don't want to design your own relay stage, you can order them in kit form from here: http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1619.htm I know this solution is a bit messy - my circuit is TTL, +5volts, and the relay boards are +12v, so you will need to either use 2 power supplies or monkey with an old PC power supply that will deliver both +5v and +12v.
