Not really. Firstly I would like to say that I am a huge fan of both the TV show and the books. After watching the first season of the show I started reading the books and I am a couple hundred pages into the 4th book now and completely caught up on the TV series. Due to the difference in mediums changes had to be made from the book to make it interesting for TV. Reading a book is a personal experience where you make up your own visuals and can easier get a feel for character thought process while a television show is visual and you only take out of it what they show you. My favorite non-spoiler example of how the TV show changes the events of the book to get them across for viewers was the recent episode "Creator". This episode, on the surface was a "clip show" containing many flashbacks to the events of previous episodes. But in reality it was a brilliant way of relaying hundreds of pages of information in the books to a single 1hr time frame. A central theme throughout the second book is Richard's fear that he is unwillingly doing the Keeper's work and is constantly struggling with that. This episode summarized all of that up to the same affect without having to devout half a season to the storyline. As a point of reference the events of the 3 episodes Light, Dark & Perdition span about 2/3's of the book "Stone of Tears" yet only comprise 3 of the 22 hours in season 2. The ABC Studios/Disney television series does an excellent job at capturing the feel for the characters and overall storyline but it diverges greatly on specifics. A couple examples at a high level that should not be spoilers for either the show or books: - Season 1 is closely mapped to the events in the first book "Wizards 1st Rule". The specifics around what happens with the boxes of Ordin are different but have the same result. - Season 2 is loosely based on the events of the second book "Stone of Tears" but draws heavily from the third book "Blood of the Fold". For example Cara doesn't show up until the very end of book 2. In the TV show Richard & friends are looking for the stone, In the books The Keeper & friends are the ones doing the looking. There are A LOT of events that happen in the second book that are not even hinted at in the TV show. Some minor characters from the TV show turn out to play MAJOR roles in the books. Other important characters in the books don't even make an appearance. I think it would be safe to say that most fans of the books are disappointed that the Mud People have not made an appearance in the show as they are so central to the storyline of the first two books. - Richard, Kahlan & Zedd are the same characters in the books and tv show though they have differing back stories. - The adaptation of Cara in the TV show from the books is spot on though the story surrounding her character is different and you really don't get to see her develop in the books until book 3 and 4 (she's actually pictured in the cover art of book 4) - The first time Kahlan envokes Con'Dar in the books is much more powerful of a scene than in the TV show but once you read it you'll understand why it was toned down for a family show. 🙂 - In the books the Mord'Sith do not have "the breath of life", there was no mass execution of 1st born sons in the town of Brenadon, banelings are a little different and both Richard and Kahlan's lineage is slightly altered. All of these changes have led to a more interesting television experience without drastically altering the storyline of the books. All in all I highly recommend reading the books as they are highly entertaining but I also enjoy the television series to see the visuals behind it. I honestly would be bored with the tv show if it was a direct carbon copy. I like when things are changes up a bit, keeps it fresh. But that's just me.
