I'm not sure why you are building your own when linear actuator when complete units with position potentiometer feedback are pretty cheap. You need to worry about a lot of mechanics including lubrication of gearing when building your own. The complete pre-built unit is self contained. I'll make the assumption that you want to reverse current on a DC motor. With Arduino, you have a motor driving shield that can do the job. I'll assume you are not using the motor shield and instead are using circuits described on the internet with a power transistor and diode for back EMF. Make sure to use a diode to take care of back emf current when you stop power and the motor acts as a generator when it slows down. You can vary the source voltage to change the speed of the motor in one direction. I would simply reverse the polarity to go the opposite direction. A relay or solid-state switch would be OK. If this is a large DC motor, or if this is a motor driven by pulse width, then you need different design work. For my applications, I try to do things with pre-built linear actuators or AC gearmotors through on/off logic. With AC, you have full ahead, full back, or stop. You might consider just giving +12, -12, or 0 volts to control the DC motor. On the other hand, if variable speed is important, then you will want to be able to increase or decrease the voltage within a range.
