I want to make my own H bridge to drive some dc motors , right now i have some projects in mind, both low power and high power some small dc motors and some medium range ones like from an electric wheel chair ; I try to search google for 'begginers design H bridge' but all i get are very basic explanations of what an H bridge is ; and they hardly ever have protection diodes I just want something solid , easily upgradeable where if i need to go from low power all i do is redesign a board with higher current ratings so far i know , it needs to have kick back diodes but i dont know what kind, and if i should use FETs JFETs, MOSFETS etc RELAYS , FUSES , Opto Isolators to keep the microController separated or what... so any insight or tips would be helpful

H bridges may not need reverse diode across them, if they have internal diodes that perform well. Sometimes this is not the case, so high speed external diodes need to be used. H bridges always need to have some dead time to prevent cross conduction or shoot through. Of course, the gate or base drive needs to be strong. All power electronics circuit need some type of overload protection. Since fuses and circuit breakers are too slow, the protection needs to be solid state.
