I am trying to connect a 5V, 1Amber relay to the parallel port, but while the relay switches on with 3 AA batteries that produce 4.5V, it doesn't turn on when I connect it with the parallel port, which gives 4.8V. I have made sure that all the pins are up(used a polymeter), so don't bother telling me to.

PC parallel port? There are no DC power pins on a parallel port. Are you trying to run a relay from a signal lead to ground? No can do. They are TTL signals with a high of >2.4 volts, and a low of <0.8 volts. The high state can supply only a few mA of current. The low state can sink 20mA of current. If the relay is sensitive enough, that is, requires only 20ma or less to actuate it, you can put the relay between an external +5v supply and the signal lead and it will activate on a low signal. Be sure to put a diode across the relay coil (diode plus to +5) or you will damage your motherboard. Or use a transistor switch to control the relay, driven by the signal. Much safer. Use any small signal NPN. Emitter to ground. Collector to relay (don't forget the diode) and base to signal via a 2k resistor. This should work any relay coil that requires up to 50ma of current.
