sheerugg asked 10000btu portable AC not cycling.?
I have a 10000 btu Everstar portable ac unit that is not operating properly. It will start running, and go for about 15 to 20 minutes, and then the compressor will turn off. After a few minutes, I can hear the compressor try to start up again, then a click, and it just goes back to fan mode. I had to substitute a dryer vent hose for the original ac vent hose, because I lot the original. The dryer hose is one of the flexible metal ones, and I notice that the metal hose gets extremely hot. Does that heat have any thing to do with the ac malfunctioning? If I let the unit sit for about an hour, I can turn it back on and get it to run for another 15 mins or so, and then it cycles off again. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
And got the following answer:
Does the compressor short cycle? As in when it tries to come back on, makes a loud diffrent sounding hum than when it normally is running then clicks and goes back off again, then a few min later the cycle repeats? If so, could be the built in delay isn't keeping it off long enough for the pressure to equalize before it tries to restart. If its not that, I'd recommend cleaning the duct, and condensor coils, as well as check the air filter. If all this checks out, its either a bad start/run capacitor, bad start relay (if it has one), bad overload, or undervoltage in the incoming a/c line. If its not short cycling, i.e the hum sounds like its running normally but it cuts right back off could be an issue w/ the electconics (temp control, main board, etc)
