First you need to check the code usually if you leave the key in the run position the engine light comes on for a few seconds then it goes out after it has done a scan on the systems.If the light stays on or suddenly comes on while in run position or while the engine is running that means the system has detected a problem.Key here is having the system scanned for error codes via the data port this will help you to know more about what has triggered the code.
